Human and Community Development Activities Committee (Ver.20071211)

We hope that the free extracurricular activities of graduate students become even more lively as part of this Graduate School GP. However, we also feel the need to present to society the legitimacy and education effects of these activities, and to impress the importance of these activities as part of educational curriculum. Therefore, we must devise a way to integrate the two vectors of freedom and legitimacy, which at first glance appears to be a contradiction.

As a solution to this problem, we have taken steps to strengthen the self-governance function of graduate students within this Graduate School GP. These steps include the establishment of "graduate student space" where graduate students supervise and manage themselves. Another step is the creation of the Human and Community Development Activities Committee, which makes it possible for graduate students to actively contribute to the group advancing the Graduate School GP.

This committee is composed of representative graduate students selected from each course (26 students: 2 from each course, 1 year term: reappointment possible), representative instructors (13 instructors: 3 year term), and an administrative office (manages administrative work including acting as aides to the representatives). Although the individual activity of both instructors and graduate students will be respected, fundamentally, management of the committee is conducted through a partnership and collaboration with the instructors. This system is a new experiment where the opinion of graduate students is reflected in the planning, management, advancement, evaluation, and other phases of this Graduate School GP.

Presently, this committee serves two main purposes. The first is to research and implement initiatives to advance the understanding of graduate students and instructors towards this GP. The second is to research and implement initiatives to advance the participation of graduate students. The list below shows the specific functions contained in these two purposes, separated and organized by both graduate students and instructors.
